Fly fishing with Jan and Thomas in Lienz
We travelled by night train, One hour before arrival experienced us an impressive natural spectacle with lightning and thunder, persistent heavy rains in Spittal-Millstättersee. On the one hand, a wonderful experience, on the other hand, we easily made our troubled thoughts to the possible effects on the fisheries.
Upon arrival we meet the owners of the fishing waters to a coffee and we received the water reports. After lunch we went with our rental car to the rivers for fly-fishing.The river “kleine Drau” had the best fishing conditions. A little more water than in autumn and the water was a little cloudy - best condition for successful nymph fishing. Immediately we caught the first fish – a rainbow trout was with a hydro-psyche nymph.
Meanwhile, the sun came out from the almost cloudless sky and we spent an enjoyable and eventful day on the river.
The next day we went to Kärnten at the river Möll. The water was a little cloudy too. We have caught many trout and a strong grayling. In a wide, slow-flowing pool brook trout took flies on the water surface. Carefully and with a long leader I presented my dry fly. Nothing. Several attempts and another fly brought no success. At my cap was still the spider that gave me Jan as a present and a little later many brook trout fought for the spider. The more violent presented, the shorter was the spider on the water. I had tears of laughter.
At the third day, we went to the canyon of the river of Villgraten. In a fantastic nature, Jan and I are delighted by fishing in beautiful pools. After lunch, the creek was cloudy; therefore we visited the famous “aquarium” on the above river of Villgraten. In clear water we had beautiful fly-fishing with dry flies and nymphs. At the end of our short holiday we were fishing again in the “kleine Drau”, witch was
cloudy after the rainfall in the night before. Neverless we had a successful fishing and we spent another busy fishing day, catching beautiful rainbow trout and grayling of 47 cm. I'm surprised every year one’s more, what a good fishing this beautiful river offers. At a final dinner with the owners of water we were so engrossed in our conversation that we almost missed the train at home.
It was nice in Lienz!
